Seeing like an artist

I’m a few days into my  Drawing A Day  project, and I am already learning something.

My observational skills are RUSTY!

I use my imagination for a lot of my whimsical artwork, and making things up in my mind’s eye is my default mode.  Placing a small object on the drawing table in front of me and drawing it from life is another mode altogether!

What I’m finding is that I want to draw preconceived ideas of what an object looks like.  I try to draw what I ‘think’ I see, rather than what I actually see.

So the Drawing A Day project will be good for me.   I enjoy drawing from life, so it’s going to be fun, and the refreshing of my skill of “seeing” what is actually there truly needs some exercising.

A Drawing A Day

I became aware of the Painting A Day phenomenon through Duane Kaiser’s  blog,  A Painting A Day.  Aside from being in awe of someone disciplined enough to do anything every day for a year, other than drinking coffee, I was in awe of Duane’s fabulous painting talent.

I recently tested my artistic discipline by taking one photograph of one object in different settings for 30 consecutive days. I surprised myself and was able to fulfill the project.

Armed with that newfound sense of resolve, this morning I revamped my former Leslie’s Blogger into Leslie’s Drawing A Day.

I did add a disclaimer…it may become “a-drawing-pretty-often” blog, rather than a drawing-a-day blog.

One never knows.

Leslie’s Art Blog in the CPSA newsletter

Leslie's Art Blog Colored Pencil Society Newsletter

I have been given the great good privilege of having one of my Leslie’s Art Blog posts published in the Colored Pencil Society of America’s, Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Chapter #109, newsletter.

Hues and News  is one impressive newsletter, and the DC Chapter needs to be very proud! I know that I am excited to have my article included!

I was contacted by newsletter editor,Vicki Fortuna, inquiring about inclusion of my post, Drawing From a Photo Reference, in their local chapter’s online newsletter, Hues and News. Vicki’s patient and efficient emails back and forth between us, and her work making my article fit the newsletter format, resulted in an article that I am very pleased to share.

I love working with colored pencil and it has been my art material of choice for over 30 years. I hope that my article will inspire artists, beginners and experienced, to give colored pencil a try.

Thank you, Vicki, and thank you Washington DC Chapter #109 for the great honor!

Fox

original colored pencil drawing, Derwent Artists pencils,  4 ½”  x 6″,  $50.

I guess I first fell in love with the fox from reading Aesop’s Fables. They seem to have that extra little bit of clever about them that lifts them into the realm of magic.

This little original drawing can be seen in my Fine Art America gallery.

I very recently started a gallery for Prints on Demand at Fine Art America. I am still adding to it, and getting used to all the functions of the site.  Stop over there and take a look around.
