Derwent Artists pencil colors that I use

I tend to line up my colors with a “red first” order.

The color chart on the Derwent site doesn’t do that, so the numbers I will give of the pencils I use will be scrambled a bit.

Here they are, in “red first” order, as they appear left to right in the photo:

  • Madder Carmine    #1900     I also use Crimson Lake #2000 as a more ‘blue’ red.
  • Scarlet Lake             #1200     This is a nice dark orange
  • Orange Chrome       #1000
  • Zinc Yellow               #0100      I like how ‘clear’ this yellow is.
  • Emerald Green        #4600
  • Mineral Green         #4500
  • Light Blue                 #3300
  • Prussian Blue           #3500
  • Imperial Purple       # 2300        The most used color in the bunch. It is the workhorse.
  • Ivory Black              #6700
  • Gunmetal                 #6900         I use this color to ‘overcolor’ my initial graphite sketch.
  • Chocolate                  #6600       Yum. Chocolate…I am using this as a substitute for Sepia. I ran into a big batch of Sepia that just crumbled and would not work in the pencil sharpener. The sepia has never recovered it’s original usefulness for me. I want it back. They must have changed the formula.
  • Copper Beech           #6100        This is another ’sepia’ substitute. But it’s lighter and red in color.
  • Venetian Red           #6300
  • Raw Sienna              #5800         Another workhorse color for me.
  • Pink Madder Lake  #1700         Sometimes I use this for a flesh effect.
  • Chinese White          #7200

There are other colors that I will play with, but the colors listed above are what I use consistently. Combining them in layers creates the effect of more colors.

I have chosen this group because they are the closest to ‘true’ colors that I can find. Red, yellow, blue and some neutrals.

I’m gonna go color now…maybe eat some chocolate…
