Pharyngula Mutating Genre Meme

Filed under: Thimk, blogging, language, meme — Leslie @ 9:42 pm

ruling class

Dear Glendon at The Flying Trilobite   made my little head hurt.  I had to thimk.  Waaaa.  Oww-wee!

He asked me to participate in a me me me me meme.  The Pharyngula Mutating Genre Meme

So in true split personality style, I did it twice. One very compliant version, following the rules, and one very ornery and recalcitrant version, following my own made-up-as-I-went-along rules.

For the folks I ask to participate, don’t follow my lead and go all balky.  Just follow the rules, like good kiddies, unless of course you think that my way is  far superior  and will further the cause of survival in a rapidly changing blogosphere… (that’s meant to be funny)

Here it is.

*   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *

The Pharyngula Mutating Genre Meme   *A blogging and scientific experiment*

There are a set of questions below that are all of the form , “The best [subgenre]  [medium]  in  [genre]  is…”.

Copy the questions, and before answering them, you may modify them in a limited way, carrying out no more than two  of these operations:

* You can leave them exactly as is.

* You can delete any one question.

* You can mutate either the genre, medium or subgenre of any one question.  For instance, you could change “The best timetravel novel in SF/ Fantasy is…”  to  “The best timetravel novel in Westerns is…” ,  or  “the best timetravel movie in SF/Fantasy is…,  or  “The best Romance novel in SF/Fantasy is…”

* You can add a completely new question of your choice to the end of the list, as long as it is still in the form “The best [subgenre]  [medium]  in  [genre]  is…”.

* You must have at least one question in your set, or you’ve gone extinct,  and you must be able to answer it yourself, or you’re not viable.

Then answer your possibly mutant set of questions.

Please do include a link back to the “parent’ blog you got them from, e. g. Leslie’s Blog to simplify tracing the ancestry, and include these instructions.

Finally, pass it along to any number of your fellow bloggers.

Remember though, your success as a Darwinian replicator is going to be measured by the propagation of your variants, which is going to be a function of both the interest your well-honed questions generate, and the number of successful attempts at reproducing them.

My great grandparent is Pharyngula.

My grandparent is The Flying Trilobite.

——————————————————————-

The Flying Trilobite’s addition is first.  My addition is next.

——————————————————————-

The Flying Trilobite says:

*The best    time travel   novel   in   SF/Fantasy  is:   Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

*The best   romantic   movie  in   scientific dystopias  is:   Gattaca (1997)

*The best   sexy   song  in  rock  is:   #1 Crush by Garbage from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet soundtrack

*The best   cult   novel  in  Canadian fiction   is:  JPod by Douglas Coupland (2006)

——————————————————————–

Leslie’s Blog  says:

*The best   timetravel    television   in   SF/Fantasy   is:   Heroes

*The best   romantic      movie       in   scientific dystopia   is:  THX 1138

*The best   sexy             song         in     traditional        is:   “Chan Chan” by the Buena Vista Social Club

———————————————————————-

I call upon the following to continue this scientific experiment:

The Memeing of Life    (you can do this, Dale. And I bet your kids can, too!)

Eastcoastdweller   (you will delight us all with you extensive knowledge of classic and great literature)

Corky’s Log   (give this a shot. You will then be able to brag to your seven children…)

Wordcarving    (this could be a real kick, done in verse…)

Fuzzy Dragons    (I know you can think and draw simultaneously)

Inner Minx   (think delicious, naughty thoughts…)

The Cramps

Now,  here’s my alternate, totally contrary, Mutant Meme.  Do Not follow my lead…

I am the anomaly.

The Rules  are “statements’ when completed, not “questions”.     i.e. “The best timetravel  novel  in SF/Fantasy is …”

For it to be a question, it would need to be worded, “Is  the best timetravel novel in SF/Fantasy…?”, etc.

I tried to make my preferences, that I want to share, fit the formula and couldn’t do it because of my shortcomings in exposure to books and movies, and the limitations of only mutating ONE area of one ’statement’.  I even fudged in the ‘following the rules’ part. The other rule limitations weren’t adequate to alleviate my shortcomings.  Alas.

So, I totally mutated, like the drosophila melanogaster, or whatever is the most exotic, unusual and remarkable possible mutation.

The best movies ever are:

“THX 1138” is by far the best scary, futuristic movie I have ever seen.  “Little Big Man” is by far the best movie I have ever seen.  “The Ruling Class” is the best, least known movie I have ever seen.

The best books ever, are,  ( and it’s not all of them by far ) :

Tolkien’s “Hobbit” and trilogy give me great pleasure, but so does O. Henry.  Ironic, isn’t it?   Ayn Rand was much maligned.  Her writing gave me idealistic hope, fool that I am.  And all of James Michener, starting with Chesapeake.

The best music ever is…and so many more…

Song?  Sexy?  Anything Blues.  Anything real rock and roll.  Anything from Etta James to The Cramps.  The best raunchy songs in rock are:   “What’s Inside a Girl?”, and  “Can Your Pussy Do the Dog?” by The Cramps.

And my addition to the ’statements’:

The    desireable        food      easily prepared       is     Raspberries.

There.  How did I do?

Am I the best Mutant ever?

Leslie

*P. S.  Please pardon the erratic nature of this post. I inadvertantly hit the ‘publish’ button before I was near ready. I will edit for days.

  1. I’m going to have think about this one for a while, but I did like the movie Time After Time,

“Tagline: Imagine! A scientific genius named H.G. Wells stalks a criminal genius named Jack the Ripper across time itself, in the most ingenious thriller of our time…”

I’m pretty sure this movie got really terrible reviews, but for some reason I really liked it.

  2. Ruling Class justified my reliance on myself rather than prayer. One of my top ten cornerstones at turning points of life. Ayn Rand is another

  3. Hi Corky. See, you are alrady thinking about it! And you already have a movie. I think you are approaching this the way I did, thiking of movies, books, etc, and then trying to make them fit the formula. That is why I am now certifiable…all this thinking…
Jack the Ripper makes an appearance in The Ruling Class, too. Busy boy.
Give it a shot. There’s no timetable like a chain letter, where your parts fall off if you don’t get right on doing the meme. Wait…

  4. Howdy TPG, I have always admired Peter O’Toole. The Ruling class was a dark, and funny flick.
I am always surprised when a piece of art changes me at some core level. I don’t ever expect it, and once it happens, it’s a relatively permanent shift.
Rand did that, too. And Heinlein.
See, this darn thing has me thinking… if you have ten cornerstones, does that make you a dodecahedron? No, a polyhedron… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodecahedron

  5. hmmm, going to have to think about this one :)
I haven’t actually seen that many scientific dystopia movies……

  6. Hi Jennifer, Nor have I, which is what was making me have to think, and hurt my little head :) I had to run to the dictionary a few times to gain my bearings.
If you would like to give this a try, it’s fun. If it begins to keep you awake at night, or causes you to have a psychotic episode, as it did me, then I understand if you pass… :)
